CNN Interviews Charles Barkley

March 19, 2009
I admit it, I’m a Charles Barkley fan because he always seemed out of step with his NBA contemporaries without resorting to dyed hair, tattoos and piercings like Dennis Rodman. He was the awkward little brother who needed prompting to get it right.

In 1993, Barkley mugged for Nike and proclaimed that he was “not a role model”. The 30-second piece was good for Nike and served as a great launch pad for Barkley. Everywhere, students and parents alike had an opinion. Today, the commercial would be uploaded to YouTube to give the topic of athlete role models an even bigger time slice.

In February, Barkley was convicted for DUI. It appears to me that he now understands that, right or wrong, in a world where few things seem principled, we continue to look to professional athletes to uphold an ideal that few of us seem able to achieve. In this video, he does the right thing which is rare: he claims responsibility for his actions. What’s more he understands that things could have gone so much worse.  He could have killed someone, even himself.

Barkley was interviewed recently by CNN about the matter. It was a good interview. Without mention of the phrase, the subject of role models came up. Barkley asserted that no one smokes marijuana because of Michael Phelps and no one take steroids because of Alex Rodriguez. (Barkley still seems troubled by the whole role model thing.) True, no one’s smoking dope because of Michael Phelps but there are kids out there who can’t help but wonder how bad marijuana is if Phelps can toke up once in a while and still win 7 gold medals. Just like there are those who don’t give a damn about the prospect of steriod-testicles, if they can help generate A-Rod’s kind of wealth. In this age of indifference, the downsides are considered minor bumps in the road.
In the interview, Barkley is asked if he has a drinking problem. Barkley’s alleged drinking problem is not the issue. The issue is his irresponsible choice and to drink and then drive. It’s poor question that only has surface-level relevance because, if he says yes, it gives us permission to blame Barkley’s decisions on his “drinking problem” and, by the same logic, allows us to drink and drive because we can “hold our booze”. If Charles has a problem with alcohol he needs to deal with it in a way he considers appropriate, which I expect will be in that same matter of fact, clumsy way I’ve come to enjoy. He’s still a role model. He should have taken a cab.
